Sink or Swim
WalkerGal attended her favourite lesson today! Well. Why favourite?
Basically everytime during this lesson, she gets so entertained by the lecturer. Seriously. The lecturer basically delivers her lesson… in a very dramatic manner. Seriously.
She always aimed to do things that catch our attention so naturally, and we just love her dearly for that. She never fail to keep us awake by her facial expression and little jokes here and there. I was perpetually smiling throughout the lesson even though I was….er.. late. My style? I’ll just enter from the backdoor of the lecture theatre and walk all the way to the front unoccupied rows. Trying to get into the occupied rows with empty seats in the centre of the row… ain’t my style.
Alrights. This is just some introduction. Now, the big thing.
Today the lesson was on Housing board. Seriously very interesting.
The word ‘En-Bloc’ finally came right in front of my eyes. After learning about this English word from Bro last time and realised that I know the meaning all along but never know the English word for it… Hur…
So what does En-Bloc mean? For example, certain flats in Toa Payoh are to be torned down and redeveloped. Residents will be asked to relocate and will be offered compensation and new flats nearby.
Some of the issues learnt kinda used up some brain juices in me. Upgrading of Housing Estates. It basically aimed to provide better facilities for people. Hoping to lead to some contentment and commitment.
However, this could have a danger of putting emphasis on material benefits as a hope that will influence emotional and soul. It could encourage people to move house.. rather than stay in one home. A house for investment.. not home. This might end up affecting our social and psychological. Living in alienated environments.. individual living, basically confined to own shell.
Will the privileges from Housing Board make the people into having higher expectations.. spoilt?
HDB is currently getting more classy in their becoming. Its a tough fight between them and the private. That I do know. But are this changes really necessary? Just some thought.. would this make HDB defeat the aim of providing homes to lower and middle income groups? Hmm..

‘en bloc’ means ‘all together as a unit’, originally from the French language.
